This chapter describes some of the scalability challenges that exist in today’s dynamic business and IT environments and how WebSphere eXtreme Scale addresses these challenges. An introduction of WebSphere eXtreme Scale and the key features of the product is also provided.

To understand the scalability challenge addressed by WebSphere eXtreme Scale, let us first define and understand scalability in a more traditional sense. Scalability is the ability of a system to handle increasing load in a graceful manner. This implies that a system can be readily extended. For example, a system has linear scaling capabilities so that doubling the CPU capacity also
doubles the maximum throughput that the system can handle.
