With the rate of cloud spending predicted to outpace overall IT spending six to one over the next few years, organizations are rightly concerned about ensuring that applications in the cloud enjoy the same level of security as apps deployed in data centers. Too often we hear that people want to move everything to the cloud. Unfortunately cloud is not the easy button, and it will not fix every problem that you have with IT today. We have seen a large number of customers who do the math after moving to the cloud only to realize that it was more expensive to run in an offsite cloud than onsite IT. These customers then move away from offsite cloud for workloads that never should have left the building. Virtualization has transformed the data center over the past decade. IT departments use virtualization to consolidate multiple server workloads onto a smaller number of more powerful servers. They use virtualization to scale existing applications by adding more virtual machines to support them, and they deploy new applications without having to purchase additional servers to do so. They achieve greater resource utilization by balancing workloads across a large pool of servers in real time—and they respond more quickly to changes in workload or server availability by moving virtual machines between physical servers. Virtualized environments support private clouds on which application engineers can now provision their own virtual servers and networks in environments that expand and contract on demand.

For many companies the appeal of the public cloud is very real. For tech startups, the cloud may be their only option, since many don’t have the capital or expertise to build and operate the IT systems their businesses need. Existing companies with established data centers are also looking at public clouds, to increase IT agility while limiting risk. The idea of building-out their production capacity while possibly reducing the costs attached to that infrastructure can be attractive. For most companies the cloud isn’t an “either-or” decision, but an operating model to be evaluated along with on-site infrastructure. And like most infrastructure decisions the question of cost is certainly a consideration. In this report we’ll explore that question, comparing the cost of an on-site hyperconverged solution with a comparable set up in the cloud. The on-site infrastructure is a Dell EMC VxRailTM hyperconverged appliance cluster and the cloud solution is Amazon Web Services (AWS).
