Your organization, like every other, must grow to survive, and is dependent upon its IT infrastructure to do that. Your organization, like every other, is also dependent upon some custom-built applications, since none can survive or grow by relying solely on unmodified off-the-shelf solutions. And custom applications require IT guidance and resources to be built, deployed and maintained. But your organization must also curb or eliminate growth in IT related costs and operational challenges.

Technology has become the heart and soul of every business. The hardware boundaries of IT have exploded beyond data centers, with mobile devices in the hands of both employees and customers alike. Application options have blossomed, from traditional to open source to software-as-a-service. Business has become global, bringing with it a demand for round-the-clock agility. Employees expect that the applications they use at work should be as easy to use the Web apps they use at home. Integration remains difficult, because it's sometimes impossible to know what will happen when someone tries to pluck one strand out of the pile. IT workload and system complexity will only get more challenging, bringing the need for disintermediation through service automation.

It’s the backbone of the modern enterprise, not just another function within it. For businesses to continue to succeed in an increasingly technology-dependent world, CIOs must assume a strategic leadership role and drive change throughout the enterprise. Driving business strategy is not an entirely new role, but it is an added responsibility to the traditional CIO job function. While many CIOs possess the skills and ambition to impact business strategy, existing IT operational models and an aging infrastructure are holding them back. CIOs who have been successful in bridging the divide between IT and the business did it by ?rst accelerating IT transformation.

In its most basic form, a runbook is an electronic or physical document that lists detailed procedures for handling every expected situation that an IT system may experience. Based on changes in system condition, incoming requests and other factors, system administrators determine which procedures to run and when to run them. Runbook procedures often include complex decision trees that indicate specific steps to follow depending on answers to pre-established questions. Administrators are responsible for performing the appropriate steps of the procedure in painstaking detail, often by manually issuing commands to components and sub-systems. Primitive runbooks are notoriously inefficient, inflexible and error prone, sometimes relying on undocumented steps known to just a few staff members. Yet, if a critical step is missed or an incorrect command is entered, the entire process may be negatively impacted.

Decision makers at many organizations question the investments made in IT. This is often because they don’t fully understand the value delivered by IT service management (ITSM) or by compliance with recommended best practices such as those defined by the IT Infrastructure Library or ITIL®. This often pressures CIOs to demonstrate the value of IT to the business. Learn how creating a great service catalog can help alleviate these pressures and why many consider it to be fundamental to any IT improvement initiative. An effective service catalog enables IT to deliver business services that are more customer and service focused, which results in higher customer satisfaction, provides standardization and consistency and increases IT visibility across the organization.

IT departments and the organizations they serve can reap dramatic benefits by codifying and automating unique processes through the development of custom applications. These applications can lower costs, improve agility, quicken time to value, give IT greater control, and bolster productivity throughout IT and among enterprise users. In fact, with the right tools in place, organizations can enable a new class of “citizen developers” who work either in or with IT to create applications and services that are highly responsive to business needs. A platform to enable this type of innovation is not only available, cost efficient and simple to deploy, but it may already be part of your IT environment.
